Ms. ____, my 4th-grade teacher, passed out an exam that was impossible to complete in the time allotted. She told the class to read the directions, located at the top of the page, and begin. I did not read the directions, which were “Answer the first and last question, and then put your pencil down to show that you are finished.” I worked furiously, answering question after question, dimly aware that my neighbors were finishing long before me. After some time Ms. ____ collected the exams and explained. An account of everything Ms. ____ taught me would be an interesting and lengthy writing assignment. Her first lesson: Follow the instructions.
