The Distance to Jesus’ Humanity

I have read that seeing Jesus is to adore him. If you ever manage to see him as he truly is, you will surely fall in love with him once again. See: Jesus is one of us, proving that God is for us and closer than ever.

But it is not so easy to see the Son of God in and through his humanity. Instead, I worship the divine Jesus who is Other, the eschatological Jesus who will return in glory. This is more of an expectation than a relationship. It is raw hope, ephemeral and distant enough that, thank God, it can never be disproven.

But I need Jesus here and now. I need Jesus in my pain and confusion. With a transcendent Jesus who is all Past and Future, it is quite possible to be alone.
