The psychology of thinking encounters several perennial problems… Perennial problems are rarely solved. Instead, they serve as loci for the accumulation of knowledge. Each generation of researchers superimpose their own ideas, analyses, and empirical observations on the work of their predecessors in an epistemic sedimentation process, which may or may not form hard rock in the fullness of time.
